Fish and Chips Survey 2008
There is currently no legislation covering the level of fat, saturates or salt in food, however the Food Standards Agency has embarked on a campaign of public awareness relating to healthy eating. Levels of fats, saturates and salt are of key importance in a healthy diet.
The purpose of this survey was to assess the levels of fat, saturates and salt in fish and chips sold ready to eat from takeaway establishments.
Stocks of the traditional food fish, which have been a staple of the British diet for many years, are no longer as plentiful as they once were. It was decided to take this opportunity to identify whether commercial pressures were leading to the substitution of traditional fish species by more exotic ones.
