Survey on the Geographical Origins of Honey - 2006

honeycomb

The aim of the survey was to determine whether the pollen spectrum of a honey was consistent with the stated geographical origin and also any further statements as to the regional, territorial or topographical origin. The survey was restricted to samples that were labelled with a particular country of origin rather than the broad statements such as 'blend of non-EC honeys'.

In particular sampling of higher value honeys that command a higher price due to claims based on properties specific to their origin was encouraged.

The analysis of the samples involved an examination of the pollen spectrum of the honey to ascertain whether the pollen present corresponded to what would be expected for the stated geographical origin. In addition the total quantity of pollen and the visual appearance and sensory characteristics (taste and odour) of the honey were assessed. The pollen spectrum also provides information as to the botanical origin of a honey in addition to its geographical origin.
