Survey of Aflatoxins, Ochratoxin and Proportions in Muesli - 2006

muesli

The aim of the survey was to assess the accuracy of the quantitative ingredients declarations made in respect of the key ingredients of the muesli and also to ascertain whether those ingredients complied with the requirements of the Contaminants in Food Regulations 2005.

Aflatoxins are naturally occurring toxins, produced by the moulds Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, which are known to be carcinogenic in animals. These can occur on peanuts, maize products, dried vine fruit and occasionally on sunflower seeds and melon seeds that have been kept in warm, humid conditions. The maximum levels permitted in certain foodstuffs are controlled by the Contaminants in Food Regulations.

Ochratoxin A is a mycotoxin with carcinogenic, nephrotoxic, teratogenic, immunotoxic and possibly neurotoxic properties. Dried vine fruits have been found to be highly contaminated and are a significant source of Ochratoxin A for people with high levels of consumption, in particular children.
