Plastics in Contact With Food Survey 2007

Cooking utensils

The Plastic Materials and Articles in Contact with Food (England) (No.2) Regulations 2006 came into force on 19th November 20061. Parallel legislation exists for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Regulations set restrictions on the use of certain monomers and additives in food plastics. The Regulations also define specific migration limits for the amount of monomers and additives used in plastics that may be transferred into a food with which the plastic material or article is in contact. Overall migration limits are also set by the Regulations, which state that no plastic material or article shall be capable of transferring its constituents to food with which it may come into contact in quantities exceeding the appropriate limit.
