Survey of Spirit Authenticity 2002
Eurofins organised this survey to investigate the extent to which spirits served in public houses and other similar establishments are diluted with water or substituted with other brands. Samples were also tested for the poisonous contaminant methanol, which is sometimes found in counterfeit spirits.
151 samples were submitted, including 55 of whisky, 32 of vodka and 17 of gin, and were analysed by pycnometry, gas-liquid chromatography and ion chromatography. 25 local authorities participated from across the UK.
